Measuring the Length and Intensity of Hot Flashes and Night Sweats
Menopause is a natural biological transition in life of women and is diagnosed by the absence of a menstrual cycle for >12 months. The transition time to menopause is called perimenopause and can last from 2-8 years. During this stage there are several symptoms that women experience due to changes in hormone levels such as hot flashes/flushes and night sweats, mood disturbances and poor sleep quality. This is often a difficult time for women trying to navigate these symptoms with everyday life.

Hot flashes/flushes and night sweats are experienced by 80% of women undergoing perimenopause. A hot flash is a sudden feeling of warmth, often most intense over the face, neck, and chest. It can cause sweating, redness, and sometimes chills after. This can affect everyday life and affect quality of sleep and mood as well. The difficulty with managing these symptoms is there is a lack of diagnostic test for perimenopause, which means women may suffer longer with these symptoms due to limited clinical training and an overburdened health care system. It has been shown that up 38% of women who have sought help for their symptoms felt they were undertreated.
We are investigating a non-invasive wearable sensor that will help quantity and profile the frequency of perimenopausal symptoms using a digital platform. This device will track hot flashes, night sweats and sleep disturbances. The ability of this device to successfully track and measure perimenopausal symptoms from women of different geographic locations and ethnicities will provide a tool for future diagnosis of perimenopause and improve the speed at which women can be helped.
